CONTRA_CHEMISTRY
Greetings!
Chemistry ! Yes, it is a fundamental discipline of modern science along with Physics and Biology. Chemistry is the branch of the physical science which mainly deals with the composition, structure, properties and nature of the matter around us. Chemistry requires Mathematical knowledge, logical and analytical approaches. There are four major braches of Chemistry are:
- Physical Chemistry
- Inorganic Chemistry
- Organic Chemistry
- Biochemistry
Physical Chemistry is the branch of chemistry which deals with the fundamental principles governing the chemical transformations. It describes the interaction between matter and energy. It carefully observes the influence of physical factors such as temperature, pressure, concentration, light, electricity, amount of substance etc. It uses theoretical principles and experimental techniques to investigate the chemical transformations and physical changes accompanying them.
Topics in the Physical Chemistry are as follows:
- Mole concept
- Kinetic Theory Of Gases
- Solid Sate
- Liquid State
- Thermodynamics
- Solutions
- Colligative Properties
- Equilibrium
- Electrochemistry
- Surface Chemistry
- Photochemistry
- Macromolecules
- Chemical Kinetics
- Spectroscopy
It requires a thorough practice of numerical questions. Memorisation level is low.
There are certain derivations also.
The understanding of physical chemistry is very important in organic , inorganic and biochemistry.
Inorganic Chemistry is the study of the properties and reactions of all the elements in the modern periodic table and all of their respective compounds, except the hydrocarbons and their derivatives. It takes part in the experimental investigation and theoretical explanation of all these elements, their chemical reactions, and properties.
Topics in Inorganic Chemistry are:
- Periodic Table
- Hydrogen
- s-block elements
- p- block elements
- d- & f- block elements
- coordination Compounds
- Metallurgy
We can see that in this branch the level of mathematics is low, but memorization is not low. Many many chemical reactions are present along with their various favorable physical conditions like temperature, pressure, catalysts etc.
Organic Chemistry is the only branch of chemistry which is fully devoted to the compounds composed of carbon and hydrogen, called hydrocarbons and their derivatives. It also deals the compounds made from hydrocarbon linked with atoms like O, N, S, P and X (Halogens). Compounds made from metals such as Li, Na, K, Mg, Ca, Fe, Cr, Mn etc. with hydrocarbons are called Organo-metallic compounds as they contain atoms of metals.
Organic chemistry is a very vast area as it contains millions of organic molecules just made by the different arrangement of carbon, hydrogens and/or heteroatoms.
(Don't get panic , if you study it regularly with determination , you will understand it.)
Reaction mechanisms are very important in organic reactions.
Topics in Organic Chemistry are:
- Hydrocarbons
- Functional Groups
- Stereochemistry
- Aromatic Compounds
- Heterocyclic Compounds
- Haloalkanes & Haloarenes
- Alcohols, Phenols and Ether
- Aldehydes and Ketones
- Carboxylic acids, Esters and Carboxylic Anhydrides
- Thiols and Thio-Ethers
- Sulphonic acids
- Amines and Imines
- Nitro Compounds
- Biomolecules
- Polymers
- Drugs
Biochemistry is the chemistry of living systems. It concerns with various biochemical reactions that take place inside of living cells ( animal and plant ), bacteria, viruses and living bodies e.g. human bodies. It attempts to correlate chemical structure with biochemical functions. It helps us to understand the metabolic activities and various biochemical mechanisms. Here we deal with Macro-organic molecules commonly known as biomolecules such as Starch, Proteins, Carbohydrates, Vitamins, Fats etc. It is the key subject for doctors and pharmacologist. It's very very important in today's era.
Major Topics in Biochemistry are:
- Biomolecules
- Carbohydrates
- Lipids
- Nucleic Acids
- Proteins
- Enzymes
- Vitamins
- Metabolism
- Photosynthesis
- Biotechnology
- Immunology
There are many experiments in the lab which deals with concepts based on physical, inorganic and organic chemistry. So, the theory must be cleared before attempting experiments.
This is my very first blog and I've just given a basic intro about four major branches of chemistry.
I wanna share my personal experience with all of you, there was a one year period where I was confused b/w B.Sc (major) in Chemistry and B.Sc (major) Physics. In that blank period, I forgot the major concepts of chemistry as I focused on Physics because in the beginning I made my mind that I would pursue Physics but later, I finally changed my decision and finalised that I will pursue Chemistry and it was a tough period.
Now, I've been learning it again since last year and I wanna help to weak students through the internet.
Chemistry really needs regularity, else its hard !
In the Second year, many challenging topics have come. First, I've to understand them clearly then I will write blogs on them.
My first blog may seem boring , so please forgive me. I am really an amateur. If someone wanna join with me to help weak students feel free to join :)
If you are new in chemistry, study it patiently, ask your teachers if you face any problems. Soon, I will start exploring this blog further.
PS:- Nuclear Chemistry is almost an independent branch of chemistry. Its closely related with Nuclear Physics.
Environmental Chemistry is now a hot-spot because nowdays due to increasing global warming, Earth is getting out of its shape day by day. Now its become an independent branch of chemistry which helps to aid this ruining planet from heavy industrialization and urbanization.
Astrochemistry, wow !! A very latest branch of chemistry which deals with the study of chemical compounds in outer-space or extra-terrestrial planets by obtaining the spectrum.
Thanks for reading ! Have a nice day :-)
